About the New York Knicks

During Game 5 of the 1970 NBA Finals, New York Knicks center/forward Willis Reed tore a muscle in his thigh. The injury was severe enough to keep him out of Game 6. Just before tip-off of Game 7, Reed hobbled onto the court and was greeted by thunderous applause from those with NY Knicks tickets. His unexpected appearance, and his willingness to play through pain, inspired the Knicks to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers, 113-99. With the victory, the Knicks claimed their first ever NBA Championship.

The sight of an injured Reed limping onto the court was so moving that fans voted the moment as the greatest in Madison Square Garden history. Oddly enough, Reed notched the game's first two baskets and then went scoreless. The game's real hero (at least according to the box score) was Walt "Clyde" Frazier who scored 36 points. The starting five of that 1970 championship team—Reed, Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, and Dick Barnett—have had their jerseys retired by the franchise.

New York Knicks basketball was founded in 1946. The franchise was a charter member of the NBA and one of only two original teams still located in its original city (the other is the Boston Celtics). The Knicks' full nickname is the "Knickerbockers," a term Washington Irving used to describe New Yorkers. The Knicks play in the Atlantic Division and are part of the Eastern Conference.

New York Knicks tickets are sold for Madison Square Garden located in Manhattan. Besides their 1970 NBA Championship, the team also won the title in 1973. Knicks tickets were sold for six other NBA Finals—three in the 1950's, one more in 1972, and two in the 1990's—but the team came up short in each series. The Knicks have fierce rivalries with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76'ers, Chicago Bulls, and Miami Heat. Red Holzman is one of the franchise's greatest coaches. He not only led the Knicks to their two championships but he also coached the team to 613 wins. Other great Knickerbockers include Patrick Ewing, Earl Monroe, and Phil Jackson.
