About the Hornets
The Hornets entered the NBA in 1988 with the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic. The Hornets franchise owes its existence to business man George Shinn. He organized an ownership team to attract the NBA to Charlotte, North Carolina. There were many detractors to the idea of the NBA in North Carolina, however Shinn had the advantage of the Charlotte Coliseum—the largest basketball-specific arena to ever serve as a full-time home to an NBA team.
While NBA fans in Charlotte liked the team, they did not like Shinn. Eroding Shinn's image was an accusation of rape and his unwillingness to pay top players. The last straw for fans was his refusal to allow Michael Jordan to run the team as part owner. After demanding a new arena with more luxury boxes and after the city of Charlotte said no, Shinn decided to relocate the team to New Orleans. The NBA approved the move but promised the city of Charlotte a new team. Shinn now regrets the bad judgments he made in North Carolina and promises to make the Hornets work in New Orleans.
The Hornets had been a perennial playoff team in Charlotte and that carried over after relocating to New Orleans prior to the 2002-2003 season. Between 2005 and 2007 the team was forced to relocate to Oklahoma City due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. While in Oklahoma City, the team failed to post a winning record. In 2007, the team returned to New Orleans and posted their best season in franchise history. The Hornets won 56 games and Byron Scott was honored with the Coach of the Year award. However, the Hornets failed to make it past the conference semifinals after falling to the San Antonio Spurs in seven games.
New Orleans Hornets tickets are sold to the New Orleans Arena located in the city's Central Business District. The team is aligned in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. The Hornets' main rivals are the Houston Rockets. Some of the franchise's prominent players include Chris Paul, Larry Johnson, Baron Davis, Alonzo Mourning, Muggsy Bogues, and Dell Curry.
