About the Grizzlies
In 1995, the Memphis Grizzlies entered the NBA as the Vancouver Grizzlies. They entered the league with another Canadian expansion team, the Toronto Raptors. The Grizzlies were going to call themselves the "Mounties" but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police objected. The team's first ever draft pick was center Bryant Reeves.
During the Grizzlies inaugural season, the team lost 23 straight games to set an NBA single-season record. After the lockout season of 1998-1999, the team saw fewer and fewer Grizzlies tickets being sold. The trend continued over the next couple of years. In March of 2001 the Grizzlies, as well as the Charlotte Hornets, applied to relocate to Memphis. The NBA granted the Grizzlies' request and the franchise began selling Memphis tickets prior to the 2001-2002 season.
With the move to Memphis, the Grizzlies became the most easterly located Western Conference team. The team is aligned in the Southwest Division and they play their home games at the FedExForum which is located in downtown Memphis. The Grizzlies are Tennessee's second major professional sports team (after the Tennessee Titans) but the only one to play in Memphis. Some notable Grizzlies include Pau Gasol, Shareef Abdur Rahim, Mike Miller, Zach Randolph, and O.J. Mayo. Hubie Brown coached the team from 2002 to 2004 and won the NBA Coach of the Year award for the 2003-2004 season.
As of 2010, the Grizzlies have yet to win a playoff game. They've qualified for the postseason three consecutive years, from 2004 through 2006, but were swept each time. Apart from those three years, the Grizzlies have posted 12 losing seasons. In those 12 losing seasons, the Grizzlies lost 54 or more games 10 times.
