About The NLCS Tickets

It’s hard for today’s sports fan to conceive of a league ending a season without a playoff.  For a long time, Major League Baseball was just that.

Until 1969, the MLB postseason consisted solely of the World Series.  The National League team with the best regular season record was awarded the National League Pennant and automatically earned a place in the Fall Classic.

There were, however, four times when teams tied for the best record in the National League.   Ties happened in 1946, 1951, 1959, and 1962.

To decide a winner in those years, the NL employed a best-of-three series.  In effect, you could have called those matchups early precursors to the National League Championship Series.

That all changed in 1969 when Major League Baseball realigned the National League into two divisions and added a playoff series.  The two division winners would meet in the NLCS.

From 1969 through the 1984 season, the NLCS was a best-of-five affair.  In 1985, it was expanded to a best-of-seven.

The best-of-seven series is formatted 2-3-2.  That means the team with home field advantage hosts Game 1, Game 2, Game 6, and Game 7.

In 1994, the National League reshuffled its team into three divisions.  They also added a wild card to the MLB Playoffs.

Home field advantage in the NLCS is awarded to the team with the best record.   In the past, home field advantage alternated between divisions.

The wild card team is prohibited from having home field advantage in the NLCS.

Besides winning the NL Pennant, the winner of the NLCS is also awarded the Warren C. Giles Trophy.  Giles served as NL president from 1951 to 1969.

The New York Mets won the very first NLCS.  They swept the Atlanta Braves on way to their first World Series title.

The St. Louis Cardinals won the very first best-of-seven NLCS.  They dismissed the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.

The Cardinals are also the first team to appear in the NLCS more than a dozen times.
