About the Nationals
The Washington Nationals came to the U.S. capital via Canada. The franchise began in 1969 as the Montreal Expos—Canada's first representative in the major leagues. The Expos reached the playoffs in strike shorten year of 1981. They defeated the Philadelphia Phillies to win their first ever playoff series and then lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. In 1994, the Expos were having their best regular season in team history, but any hopes of World Series glory were dashed when the postseason was canceled due to a player's strike. Facing financial ruin and completely uncompetitive, the team narrowly averted having its franchise revoked. Instead, the club was purchased by MLB in 2002 and moved to Washington D.C. in 2005.
Once in Washington, the team was renamed the Washington Nationals after a previous MLB franchise that played in that city. Incidentally, a complete name change after relocating hadn't happened in MLB since 1972. That's when the Washington Senators moved to Arlington and changed their name to the Texas Rangers. The Nationals are aligned in the National League's East Division. The team plays at Nationals Park located in the Navy Yard neighborhood of D.C., along the Anacostia River. Nationals Park is the first LEED-certified green stadium in major professional sports.
A perennial fifth place team, the Nationals did make a splash on in 2010 with the debut of pitching phenom, and the most-hyped prospect of all-time, Stephen Strasburg. In his first outing on a major league mound, fans with Nationals tickets saw Strasburg picked up the win by striking out 14, allowing just 2 earned runs, and walking nary a batter in 7 innings pitched. Strasburg was just one strikeout away from the MLB record for a pitching debut. Other notable Nationals and Expos include Tim Raines, Vladimir Guerrero, Andrew Dawson, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and Gary Carter. The Nationals are one of only two teams that have yet to reach the World Series; the other is the Seattle Mariners.
