About the Blue Jays

The Toronto Blues Jays entered the major leagues in 1977 as an expansion team alongside the Seattle Mariners. The Blue Jays were the MLB's second team to be based in Canada after the Montreal Expos entered the league in 1969 (the Expos have since moved to Washington D.C.). The Jays played their first regular season game on April 7, 1977. It's remembered not for the score or who won (Toronto defeated the Chicago White Sox, 9-5) but for a snowstorm that started right before the game. The Blue Jays finished their inaugural season with just 54 wins. Toronto qualified for the postseason for the first time in 1985 but lost to the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series in seven games.

Blue Jays tickets have been sold for two World Series championships, 1992 and 1993. In 1992, the Jays—featuring Dave Winfield, Jack Morris, Joe Carter, and Roberto Alomar—defeated the Atlanta Braves, four games to two. The following year, the Blue Jays defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to claim their second title in a row. The series is famous for Joe Carter's championship-clinching three-run homer off of Philadelphia closer Mitch Williams in the bottom of the ninth inning. It marked the second time in-a-row that Carter was involved with the final play of a World Series. The previous year he caught the final out of the Fall Classic while playing first base. The 1993, team also featured future hall of famers Rickey Henderson and Paul Molitor.

The Blue Jays are part of the American League East Division with the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays. The Jays play their home games at Rogers Centers in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The stadium, which used to be called "Skydome," is next to the CN Tower which is located on the shores of Lake Ontario. Some of the team's most notable players, besides the aforementioned names, include John Olerud, Tony Fernandez, Carlos Delgado, and Roger Clemens.
