About the AnglesThe Anaheim Angels were founded in 1961 by country music legend Gene Autry. When they entered the league they were known as the Los Angeles Angels. In 1965, the franchise changed its name to the California Angels. From 1997 to 2004 the team was known as the Anaheim Angels. Currently, at least as of 2010, the franchise goes by the name Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. As you might imagine, with all these name changes came several ballparks. The team played at Wrigley Field (the L.A. version) during its first year in the league. Next, the Angels shared Chaves Ravine with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1966, the Angels moved into their current home Angel Stadium of Anaheim, also known as "The Big A." Led by manager Mike Scioscia, the Angels won the World Series in 2002 by sweeping the San Francisco Giants. Anaheim slugger Troy Glaus was named series MVP. Other prominent players on the Angels' championship team were Garret Anderson, Darin Erstand, and Tim Salmon. In 1986, the team came close to winning the American League pennant, but fell to the Boston Red Sox in seven games in the American League Championship Series. As of 2010, the Angels have won just one World Series and eight West Division titles. Some of the franchise's most-outstanding players over the years include Rod Carew, Nolan Ryan, Don Baylor, Reggie Jackson, and Jim Fregosi. The Angels are aligned in the West Division of the American League with their rivals the Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, and Texas Rangers. Gene Autry wasn't the franchise's only famous owner. The Walt Disney Company owned the team from 1997 to 2005. Before every Angels home game, the song "Calling All Angels" by Train is played over the PA system. If the Angels are tied or losing when the seventh inning rolls around, the "rally monkey" makes an appearance on the team's scoreboard. As previously mentioned, the Angels have undergone several name changes, but they've always had one nickname, "The Halos." |
