About Kanye West

An American singer, producer and rapper, Kanye West is a musical force, in his own right. He broke onto the scene as an artist in 2004 with his debut album, The College Dropout, releasing Late Registration, Graduation and 808s & Heartbreak thereafter. All of West’s albums met incredible commercial and critical success as well as numerous awards and accolades. He also runs his own label, GOOD Music, which also boasts several credible, successful artists.

West started his commercial career producing music for Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records, where he received acclaim for his work on Jay-Z’s successful hit album, The Blueprint. West has also produced music for Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Common, John Legend, Paul Wall, Ludacris and many others. He was one of the first producers to incorporate samples from old-school soul songs mixed with a modern drum and instrument sounds.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, West has proudly represented for his Windy City hometown since the inception of his career. He was a student at the American Academy of Art and Chicago State University, before dropping out to pursue his music career.

Even after producing mega-hits for many top stars, West still had a hard time getting a record deal. Most industry heavyweights saw him as a producer first and not marketable enough as a rapper. In 2002, he was involved in an almost-fatal car wreck, which served as the inspiration behind his first hit single “Through the Wire.” This single was included on The College Dropout, released in 2004 by Roc-A-Fella and going on to receive be certified triple platinum, establishing West as an artist.

West has seen some personal setbacks, including the demise of his relationship with his longtime fiancé and the death of his mother, Donda West. He has also been at the center of a few awards show controversies, storming the stage twice to protest the choice of award winners.
