Wynonna Judd is one of the few country music superstars to have it big as both a member of a group and as a solo act. She’s in an even smaller contingent of singers who have partnered with their mom.
Wynonna teamed with her mother Naomi to form one of country music’s most successful and popular duos, The Judds. The couple reigned supreme from 1983 through 1991. During that time they recorded eight albums, sold 20 million units, and captured over 50 major awards. They were country music’s top duo until Brooks & Dunn took over in the early 1990s.
The mother and daughter team launched a farewell tour in 1991. They were forced to call it quits due to Naomi’s hepatitis C. Since their breakup, the duo has reassembled for a one-off New Year’s Eve concert in 1999, a full-fledged tour in 2000, and an 18-city jaunt in 2010. They’ve also released a handful of new songs.
Wynonna released her first solo album in 1992. The album was an unmitigated success. It was certified 5x Platinum and produced three number one singles: "She Is His Only Need," "I Saw the Light," and "No One Else on Earth." “I Saw the Light” was the number one country song of ’92.
Wynonna followed her solo debut with Tell Me Why in 1993 and Revelations in 1996. Respectively, the albums peaked at number one and two on the main country music chart. Both earned Platinum certifications.
The other albums in Wynonna’s discography are The Other Side (1997), New Day Dawning (2000), What the World Needs Now is Love (2003), and Sing: Chapter 1 (2009). All stalled at number five except for What The World Needs Now Is Love. That opus went all the way to the top spot.
Wynonna has been married three times. Her second husband was arrested for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13. Her third husband had his leg amputated above the knee after a serious motorcycle accident. Wynonna has publically admitted to having severe dependency on food and was arrested for driving under the influence.
Wynonna was born Christina Claire Ciminella on May 30, 1964. She performs under her mother’s maiden name, “Judd.” Often, she just goes by “Wynonna.” Her half-sister is actress Ashley Judd.
