The White Stripes are a duo consisting of Jack White and Meg White. Unlike other acts who perform as a duo, The White Stripes don’t use other musicians. They create all the music themselves.
The White Stripes’ sound is a blend of blues, rock, and punk. Usually, Jack is on the guitar singing while Meg plays the drums. Sometimes Jack plays the piano and sings and on a handful of songs Meg is the lead vocalist. Despite there only being two musicians in The White Stripes, the duo produces a lot of sound.
Their recordings are known for their low-fi recording techniques. In many ways, listening to The White Stripes, either live or via a recording, is like going back in time. Even so, you can always hear the faint influences of punk, garage rock, and alternative rock.
The duo released six albums between 1999 and 2007 and sold White Stripes tickets all over the world. They are considered one of the most influential and important bands of the 21st century.
Their albums have sold adequately, but their singles have had little success on Billboard’s main singles chart. Their 2003 song, “Seven Nation Army,” thanks to its indelible guitar riff, has become a staple at sporting events all over the world.
One of the biggest questions hovering over the band is the relationship between Jack and Meg. During their early days they billed themselves as brother and sisters. The couple was married for four years in the late 1990s. Jack Gillis took Meg’s last name thus becoming “Jack White.”
The band first performed live in August of 1997. They were part of Detroit’s underground garage rock scene. Of all the bands within that movement, they were the only ones to gain national prominence.
Jack was in bands before The White Stripes but Meg didn’t start playing the drums until 1997. In interviews, Jack said that something clicked as soon as Meg picked up the drums Meg never took lessons or studied formally. In fact, her drum playing is often criticized. Of course, her straight-forward style is the perfect counterpoint to Jack’s virtuoso axe playing.
The band was originally going to be called “The Peppermints.” Since their last name was “White” they settled on “The White Stripes.”
