About the Band Train
Train’s most famous song is “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” from their 2001 album of the same name. Produced by the legendary Brendan O’Brien, Drops of Jupiter is the band’s first multiplatinum album and its lead single was awarded the 2002 Grammy for Best Rock Song.
Train formed in San Francisco in the mid-1990’s when lead singer Patrick Monahan and guitarist Rob Hotchkiss joined forces. The duo later recruited Jimmy Staffford to play lead guitar, Charlie Colin to play bass and Scott Underwood to wail on the drums. Hotchkiss and Colin have since left the band.
In 1997, despite being unsigned, the band was opening for such acts as Barenaked Ladies and the Counting Crows. Then Train coughed up $25,000 of their own money to finance the recording of their self-titled debut. The album eventually led to a contract with Columbia records.
Train achieved further notoriety when they released “Meet Virginia” in 1999—a song that would eventually reached number 15 on the charts.
Apart from their debut and sophomore efforts, Train has released three more studio albums: My Private Nation (2003), For Me, It’s You (2006) and Save Me San Francisco (2009).
Train has achieved success on the Billboard 200 and the Hot 100, but they’ve had even more success on the Adult Contemporary Charts. Their mix of rock, pop and country is quite accessible and attracts fans from multiple genres.
This universal appeal is probably why Train’s music has been featured in numerous films and television shows. “She’s on Fired” was heard in 2001 comedy The Animal and “When I Look To The Sky” was used in the trailer for 2004’s Jersey Girl.
“Free” was heard in an episode of Fox's Party of Five. Train’s “Ordinary” was featured in both Spider-Man 2 and NBC’s Heroes. And the band released “Get To Me” as a single after Cingular used it in a commercial.
Before forming Train, Monahan was in a Led Zeppelin cover band. That probably explains why Train covered Zeppelin’s “Ramble On” for Midnight Moon, a DVD of the band's live performances.
In 2002, Train performed Aerosmith’s “Dream On” for the MTV show Icon. The performance proved so powerful that the band now plays the song at their shows.
