About Barbra Streisand
Barbra Streisand is one of those wildly talented hyphenates – singer-actress-director – who is impossibly good at everything she attempts. The New York native landed her first Broadway role in the 1962 staging of I Can Get It for You Wholesale.
After hearing her on the original cast recording for the musical, Columbia Records signed her to a deal and issued her debut, The Barbra Streisand Album, a year later. The effort went gold, broke into the Billboard Top 10, and was followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album and The Third Album, in 1963 and 1964, respectively.
Nevertheless, Streisand went back to Broadway, appearing in Funny Girl for over two years. During the run, her performance of “People” was released as a single and cracked the Top 10. The People album did even better, making it all the way to number one.
Opting to go big, rather than go home, Streisand put up My Name Is Barbra in 1965 as the first of five television specials. Two years later, she added the Funny Girl film and an Oscar as two more notches on her belt of huge successes.
Streisand's next few times at bat on the silver screen and on vinyl didn't fare as well, until “Stoney End” once again took her into the Top 10 and The Owl and the Pussycat got her back on track in Hollywood.
With The Way We Were and A Star Is Born, Streisand managed to meld her loves of music and film, scoring two number one singles along the way. Platinum albums and chart-topping hits became the norm, including her "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" duet with Neil Diamond and her "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" collaboration with Donna Summer. Then, Barry Gibb helped her with 1980's Guilty which became her top-selling album to date.
Back on screen, Streisand directed and starred in Yentl in 1983, The Prince of Tides in 1991, and The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996. In between, she racked up more hit albums and sold-out tours, one of which was documented in 2000's Timeless: Live in Concert CD/DVD package.
From that point forward, Streisand focused more on music for the next decade with 2003's The Movie Album, 2005's Guilty Pleasures, 2007's Live in Concert, and 2009's Love Is the Answer. That trend carried over into the next decade, as well, with 2011’s What Matters Most: Barbra Streisand Sings the Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman kicking things off.
