About the Steve Miller Band
Ever since a young Steve Miller met music luminaries like Les Paul and Charles Mingus, he's had a taste for the art. He even got some early guitar lessons from Paul prior to pulling together his first band with Boz Scaggs, the Marksmen Combo. Miller was only 12. When the pair got to college, they made other attempts at bands.
Then, Miller headed for Chicago in 1964, determined to get to the root of the blues. There, he spent a couple of years gigging around with Barry Goldberg before heading west to San Francisco to establish the Steve Miller Band. More gigging followed, including a 1967 set at the Fillmore backing Chuck Berry.
Scaggs made his way to San Fran, too, and joined the ranks just prior to the Monterey Pop Festival and a deal with Capitol Records. Their debut, the blues-influenced and psychedelia-tinged Children of the Future, came in 1968 and met with a warm response. The same year, Sailor, peaked at number 24 on the Billboard 200.
From 1969's Brave New World, Miller extracted a couple of solid rock radio singles in "Space Cowboy" and the title track. Revolution, Your Saving Grace, and Number 5 kept his prolific and respectable release string going. The mainstream, though, had yet to embrace him.
Two weaker efforts -- Rock Love in 1971 and Recall the Beginning: A Journey from Eden in 1972 -- didn't help. Neither did the car accident that broke his neck, knocking him down for over a year.
Then, with The Joker in 1973, Miller found his voice. The set went platinum as the titular single topped the pop charts. Rather than ride that momentum, Miller took a three-year hiatus during which he built a studio on his farm.
When he came back, he did so with a fire in his belly, dropping two albums in less than a year -- 1976's Fly Like an Eagle and '77's Book of Dreams. Fly Like an Eagle didn't just go platinum, it sold more than four million copies as "Rock'n Me" hit number one, with "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Take the Money and Run" also charting. Book of Dreams did almost as well, topping out at sales of three million on the strength of singles like "Jet Airliner."
By this point, Miller had been on the charts enough times to warrant a compilation, Greatest Hits 1974-1978. He followed that up with another extended break.
It was 1981 when Miller released Circle of Love which didn't do well at all, so he hit back with Abracadabra a few months later. The "Abracadabra" single went to number one, in case there were any doubters. Three more albums filled the '80s, though none of them made any impact -- Italian X Rays in 1984; Living in the 20th Century in 1986; and Born 2B Blue in 1988.
After another career interlude, the new decade proved lucky for Miller as 1993's Wide River spawned a Top 40 single in the title track. Miller and company continued touring all the while, sometimes partnering with other classic rockers like Joe Cocker.
Forming his own record label, Miller issued Bingo! in 2010, followed by Let Your Hair Down in 2011.
