During the early grunge days of alternative rock, a number of bands jockeyed for position with their own unique twist. Soundgarden took their cues from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, carving out a heavy metal-sharpened edge that served them well. They softened it up with touches of punk and psychedelia, humor and smarts. With vocalist Chris Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil anchoring their sound, the band rose above the fray, their early start on indie Sub Pop yielding to a major label deal.
Thayil and two friends, bassist Hiro Yamamoto and Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt, made their way from Illinois to Washington. In 1984, Yamamoto formed a band with his roommate who just happened to be Cornell. Thayil signed on in short order and the group became Soundgarden. Original drummer Scott Sundquist was replaced by Matt Cameron two years later as the group's cult following started to expand.
In mid-1987, Pavitt's Sub Pop signed Soundgarden and released the Soundgardening Life EP. Along with the FOPP in 1988, Soundgarden enjoyed modest success that was enough to get some labels buzzing. Opting for SST, Soundgarden issued Ultramega OK in late 1988 to solid reviews.A major label deal was the next obvious move. Now on A&M, Soundgarden released Louder Than Love in 1989. Again, positive reviews flowed in and word of mouth helped sales along. A Grammy nomination didn't hurt, either.
