Shrillex is the stage name of Sonny John Moore. Although Shrillex has produced recordings in several different genres, he’s most famous for his work in electronic dance music. In 2009, under the name “Sonny,” Moore released the EP Gypsyhook. The album contained three songs and several remixes. In June of 2010, Moore released another EP but this time under the name Skrillex. Titled My Name Is Skrillex, the EP was made available for free download on his Myspace page (the link is now on his Facebook page).
Later in 2010, Shrillex released another EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. This EP, made in Shrillex’s apartment, was not given away. The EP produced two singles, "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" and "Rock n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain)." The release contains contributions from Bare Noize, Penny, and Foreign Beggars. Scary Monsters received critical praise and peaked at number 49 on the main album charts. It also earned Shrillex three Grammy nominations.
Argue all you want about the artistic merits of dance music and electronica, but there’s no denying that Shrillex has won six Grammy Awards. He was nominated for five awards in 2012 including “Best New Artist” (one of four categories opened to every genre) and three more in 2013. Four of his six victories came in the field of dance/electronica with his other two wins coming in the “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical” category.
Born in 1988 in California, Moore began his music career as the lead singer of the punk band From First to Last. With him at the helm the group released two albums, Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count (2004) and Heroine (2006). Originally, Moore contacted FFTL about being their guitarist. He was moved behind the microphone after producers heard him singing.
Over the years, Shrillex tickets have been collected at major venues all over the nation. He has toured with Deadmau5, All Time Low, Atreyu, Tommy Lee, and DJ Aero as well as appearing on the Vans Warped Tour marquee.
