Shinedown formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 2001 with original members Brent Smith, Brad Stewart, Jasin Todd, and Barry Kerch. Zach Myers would join the ranks later on. Two years after getting together, the band offered up their Atlantic Records debut, Leave a Whisper.

A number of successful tracks from the album helped Shinedown build their fan base; among them were "Fly From the Inside," "Burning Bright," "45," and the Lynyrd Skynyrd cover, “Simple Man.” The band followed that release in 2004 with the live DVD Live From the Inside which combined a documentary with a concert performance filmed on the last night of the Leave a Whisper tour.

Us and Them came a year later, spawning more popular cuts in “Save Me,” “Heroes,” and “I Dare You.” “Save Me” topped the Active Rock Charts for a record-setting 12 consecutive weeks. The band got another boost when Chris Daughtry performed “I Dare You” on American Idol.

Three separate versions of the album have been issued: the standard, a limited edition, and a store-specific. There is also a 25-track deluxe edition available on iTunes.

Nearly two years of touring in support of Us and Them included the SnoCore Tour with Seether, Halestorm, and Flyleaf; the Equinox Tour with Trapt; and a North American run opening for Rob Zombie and Godsmack.

Shinedown headed to Los Angeles to record in 2007 and emerged with The Sound of Madness in June of 2008. A deluxe edition with three bonus tracks was also issued. The album, once again, topped the Active Rock Charts.

The first single "Devour" was used for WWE's Night of Champions event, as well as on the soundtracks for The Final Destination and Madden NFL 09. However, it was the second single, “Second Chance,” that has made the biggest impact, cracking the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In the spring of 2008, guitarist Jasin Todd departed the group and eventually joined Fuel. Todd was replaced briefly by Nick Perri before leaving rhythm guitarist Zach Myers to cover both roles.

For 2009, Shinedown re-released their albums digitally with a swarm of bonus materials. They also put out The Sight of Madness, a digital video album featuring their various music videos and some live performances, as well.

More soundtrack work came in 2010 with "Her Name is Alice" being recorded for Alice in Wonderland and “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)” for The Expendables. Even still, Shinedown wasn't finished working The Sound of Madness. A fifth single, "The Crow and the Butterfly," dropped in April of 2010.

A summer of touring followed with the Carnival of Madness Tour. One of the shows was filmed for release as yet another live DVD. A deluxe CD/DVD version of The Sound of Madness also saw daylight in late 2010.
