Rod Stewart is a British singer and songwriter who broke onto the U.S. scene in the late 1960s and has since established himself as a lasting artist and musical force.
Born in London, Stewart’s distinctive voice --- a raspy tenor sound --- has always been his calling card, setting him apart from other artists. In additional to a long and successful solo career, he also pioneered the mix of blues and rock with The Jeff Beck Group and Faces, both of whom are widely credited for forming the heavy metal and punk music genres.
However, it was Stewart’s solo career that cemented his place in rock/pop history. Since the early 70s, he has churned out a string of hits to both critical and commercial success, including Maggie May, Hot Legs, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?, Downtown Train, Some Guys Have All The Luck, Forever Young and Rhythm of My Heart. He has release a whopping 62 hit singles, 31 of which reached the Billboard Top 10 and six of which went all the way to number one. In fact, Q Magazine rated him #33 on a list of the “Top 100 Greatest Singers of all Time.”
In addition to his music, Rod Stewart is perhaps most well-known for his well-publicized relationships with a number of high-profile beauties and super models. He was married to model Rachel Hunter for 16 years, before the couple divorced in 2006. He has since remarried for the third time to model Penny Lancaster-Stewart, with whom he fathered his seventh child.
He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1999 and had to undergo surgery; the procedure threatened his voice and he had to re-learn how to sing. Since that time, Stewart has been active in The City of Hope Foundation charity, working to raise money to find a cure for cancer.
Stewart won his first Grammy Award in 2005 for his pop vocal album Stardust….The Great American Songbook Volume III. He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and in the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. He has the dubious distinction of getting to perform in front of the largest concert crowd ever in a 1994 New Year’s Eve Celebration, which was attended by 3.5 million fans.
