About the Mayhem Festival

The Mayhem Festival gives metal heads a yearly excuse to make devil horns with their fingers and bang their heads. This touring metal and hard rock festival began in 2008 and is usually on the road in July and August. The tour visits between 25 and 30 North American markets. The Mayhem Festival is the brainchild of Kevin Lyman and John Reese. The two partnered for the Taste of Chaos tour while Lyman founded the Vans Warped Tour.

The Mayhem Festival generally features bands that have recently released or are about to release an album. Artists perform on one of three stages, and like other festivals, Mayhem hosts vendor booths and various exhibitions. Fans can also expect performances from comedians, dancers, and freestyle motocross riders. Another fixture of the Festival is a battle of the bands competition. This contest, which first appeared in 2009, crowns a new winning band at every tour stop. Rockstar Energy Drinks was the festival's first title sponsor.

Slipknot, Disturbed, Mariyn Manson, Slayer, Korn, and Rob Zombie have all co-headlined the event. Other bands that have played at the festival include Fiver Finger Death Punch, Lamb of God, Bullet for My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, and Trivium.

The 2008 tour was quite painful for certain members of Slipknot. On the tour's opening night, Slipknot's turntablist, Sid Wilson, jumped off the stage and broke both his heels. He was forced to continue the tour with his feet in casts. Later in the tour, drummer Joey Johnson broke his ankle. Amazingly, Slipkot played every show of the Mayhem Festival Tour although they did cancel several European dates.
