About Rihanna
Most people know R&B singer Robyn Fenty by her middle name, Rihanna. Born on the Caribbean island of Barbados where she did some modeling, she served as an army cadet as part of a Barbados sub-military program. She also won the Miss Combermere Beauty Pageant in 2004.
When she was 15, Rihanna formed a trio with two female classmates. They were introduced to producer Evan Rogers who was vacationing on the island. Rogers has said of the meeting that "the minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist."
Guided by Rogers, Rihanna and her mom spent a year going back and forth between Barbados and Rogers' home in Connecticut. Finally, when Rihanna turned 16, they moved to the U.S. so she could pursue a music career.
Although it took a year to record some demos because of her school schedule, Rihanna's voice was finally heard. After auditioning for Def Jam top boss Jay-Z, she had herself a record deal.
Her debut album, Music of the Sun, was released in 2005 and found its way into the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 200 chart. Her sophomore effort, 2006's A Girl Like Me, made an even better impression with an appearance in the top five. It yielded Rihanna's first number one single, “SOS,” along with two other songs that cracked the Top 10.
The follow-up, 2007's Good Girl Gone Bad, continued her prolific release schedule and chart ascension. It climbed all the way to number two on the album chart and spawned five Top 10 singles, including three that reigned supreme -- “Umbrella,” “Take a Bow,” and “Disturbia.” Also in that collection was the bonafide global smash “Don't Stop the Music.”
The effort earned Rihanna nine Grammy Award nominations, and a win for her collaboration with Jay-Z on “Umbrella.” She also nabbed two World Music Awards for World's Best-Selling Pop Female Artist and Female Entertainer of the Year in 2007. The following year saw her grab two American Music Awards to keep them company.
Her fourth set, Rated R, was released in late 2009. The record's first three singles all landed Top 10 spots, tying Rihanna with Beyonce as the two female artists with the most Top 10 hits in the United States since 2000. At the 2010 Grammy Awards, Rihanna brought home two more trophies for a subsequent work with Jay-Z, “Run This Town.”
