About R. Kelly
R. Kelly is one of those guys with a bunch of components to his job description – producer/singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. Along with his backing band, Public Announcement, Kelly came on the scene in 1992. The new jack swing sound was taking its final bow, but Kelly managed to bring some of it along with him, blending it into his own brand of soulful, funky R&B.
His 1992 debut effort, Born into the 90s, found an immediate audience in the R&B world with some crossover success in pop, as well. Singles like "Honey Love," "Slow Dance (Hey Mr. DJ)," and "Dedicated" all got Kelly established.
The following year, Kelly issued 12 Play and vaulted to bonafide superstar status. More than five million albums flew off the shelves thanks to smash singles like "Sex Me, Pts. 1-2," "Your Body's Callin'," and "Bump n' Grind," the last of which topped both the pop (for four weeks) and R&B charts (for 12).
Staking an early claim as a producer, Kelly helmed Aaliyah's debut hit, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, in 1994. Taking his production to the next level, Kelly wrote and co-produced Michael Jackson's “You Are Not Alone” in 1995.
Back at his own ranch, Kelly released 1995's eponymous album and hit number one with it on the Billboard Hot 200. Another four million records sold, another three platinum singles... it was all in a day's work for the R&B rainmaker. The cuts – "You Remind Me of Something," "Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)," and "I Can't Sleep Baby (If I)” – all topped the R&B charts and cracked the Top 10 on the pop side of the aisle.
Then, in 1996, "I Believe I Can Fly" took it all higher. The cut from the Space Jam soundtrack won multiple Grammy Awards – Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television. He followed that up with another film track, “Gotham City” from Batman & Robin.
By this point, Kelly's mojo couldn't be contained, so he went big with the double-disc R. in 1998. Seven million copies later, any doubters were firmly put in their places. The lead single was a duet with Celine Dion, "I'm Your Angel." It sat at number one on the Hot 100 for six weeks.
Come 2000, Kelly issued TP-2.com and enjoyed three more weeks at the top of the Hot 200 album charts. Hits, hits, and more hits flowed with "I Wish," "Fiesta" featuring Jay-Z, "Feelin' on Yo Booty," and "The World's Greatest."
Because “Fiesta” did so well, R. and Jay decided to see what would happen if they made a whole album. The Best of Both Worlds was the result, but it was dogged by bootleg copies and a personal scandal in Kelly's life involving sex with underage girls. Kelly countered with "Heaven, I Need a Hug."
Bootlegging also kneecapped Kelly's next studio set, Loveland, which he reworked as 2003's Chocolate Factory led by the “Ignition” single. He picked up his release pace and issued Happy People/U Saved Me in '04, with a second collection of tracks from The Best of Both Worlds coming later the same year.
Getting in one more album prior to his child pornography trial, Kelly dropped TP.3 Reloaded which included his "Trapped in the Closet" milieu. A couple of other records rounded out the decade, 2007's Double Up and 2009's Untitled, without making too much of a splash. In 2010, two more sets dropped – Epic, a collection of his film songs and other stuff, and Love Letter.
