About Projekt Revolution
Once bands hit a certain point in their careers, it's only fitting that they create their own touring music festival. It worked for Perry Farrell's Lollapalooza and it worked for Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest. In 2002, Linkin Park entered the fray with Projekt Revolution.
For the first year out, the fest only boasted one stage and was mainly a means for Linkin Park to tour in support of Hybrid Theory. Cypress Hill, Adema, and DJ Z-Trip joined them on the venture. The next year saw the release of Linkin Park's Meteora and the 2003 Projekt Revolution tour with Mudvayne, Xzibit, and Blindside.
For 2004, a second platform was added and dubbed Revolution Stage. That's where the less-than-marquee artists got to play. On the Main Stage were Korn (touring for the last time with guitarist Brian Welch), Snoop Dogg, The Used, and Less Than Jake, with Ghostface Killah, Funeral for a Friend, downset., M.O.P., Mike V. and The Rats, Instruction, No Warning, and Autopilot Off on the Revolution Stage.
Both 2005 and 2006 went by without Projekt Revolution taking place. But the tour was back in 2007 and greener than ever. Linkin Park donated $1 from each ticket sold to American Forests. They also used biodiesel to power their tour buses and offered information on how to live green at the shows.
Although Muse was unable to accept an offer to perform, the Revolution forged on, filling the Main Stage with My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, Placebo, and Julien-K. The smaller stage saw performances by Mindless Self Indulgence, Saosin, The Bled, Styles of Beyond, and Madina Lake.
In addition to the Clarkston, Michigan, show on August 22, 2007 being streamed live on MySpace, Linkin Park sold downloads of their live sets for $11. The only venue that would not agree to participate was Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York.
The next year, Projekt Revolution went international with stops in Munich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, and Milton Keynes, the latter of which included a surprise appearance by Jay-Z and was also captured for a live CD/DVD package, Road to Revolution: Live at Milton Keynes. For Europe, Linkin Park was joined by Pendulum, N*E*R*D, Enter Shikari, The Used, InnerPartySystem, The Blackout, and The Bravery.
The 2008 line-up in North America featured Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, The Bravery, Busta Rhymes (who left the tour due to lack of financial support), Ashes Divide, and Street Drum Corps (who got bumped up from the second stage). Atreyu, 10 Years, Hawthorne Heights, and Armor for Sleep rocked the Revolution Stage.
Another couple of down years went by before the next PR ventured to Europe in 2011 with Guano Apes, Dredg, Middle Class Rut, Die Antwoord, and Anberlin on board.
