Phoenix Bio

Versailles, France may not normally be synonymous with alternative rock bands, but in the case of Phoenix, the connection is solid. Founded by Thomas Mars, Deck D'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz in the mid-1990s, the group started out on the French bar circuit as a cover band whose repertoire consisted mainly of Hank Williams and Prince covers.

Once they took on the Phoenix moniker, the guys pressed a single and found their way to a deal with Source Records with a sound that blended 80s-style pop synths with a punk rock aesthetic. Their debut, United, dropped in 2000 after two singles – "If I Ever Feel Better" and "Too Young" – tested the waters and found warm receptions. “Too Young” made it into two films, Lost in Translation and Shallow Hal.

It would be four years before United's follow-up would be released. Alphabetical finally saw daylight in 2004 and moved Phoenix into a more mainstream trajectory with the success of two more singles – "Everything Is Everything" and "Run Run Run" – on alternative rock radio.

Supporting Alphabetical in 2005, Phoenix hit the road for a three-continent, 150-show tour which resulted in Live! Thirty Days Ago.

The following year welcomed the band's third effort, It's Never Been Like That, which was recorded at Planet Roc studios in Berlin. Tours of Europe and the United States ensued.

It wouldn't be until 2009 that Phoenix would release Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The first single, "1901," has been used in trailers for four films (Valentine's Day, Alice in Wonderland, Where the Wild Things Are, and New York, I Love You), a Cadillac commercial, and episodes of four different television shows (Cougar Town, Entourage, Royal Pains, and The Vampire Diaries).

Appearances on late-night TV also boosted Phoenix's visibility, with Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien all coming through. A win for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards didn't hurt either.

In the midst of much touring, Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo filled the Phoenix festival schedule for 2010.
