Paul Simon's "Graceland" was released in August of 1986. The album was a huge success with both fans and critics. It won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1986 and in 1987 its title track won the Grammy for Record of the Year. By all accounts, Graceland is the pinnacle of Simon's musical output. Yet, it followed one of the lowest points of his recording career and its release almost didn't happen.

After the utter failure of his 1983 album, "Hearts and Bones," Simon thought his days as a viable commercial artist were over. Then, as he was driving alone one night, he listened to a cassette of African music loaned to him by a close friend. He was so enamored with the unique sounding music that he wrote lyrics to one the songs. That piece became the fourth track of the Graceland album and the entire incident revitalized Simon's creativity.

Graceland was only reluctantly released by Warner Bros. Records because they thought the album was too eclectic for a mainstream audience. Of course, eclecticism has always been a hallmark of Simon's career. A folk-rock singer-songwriter at heart, Simon often drew inspiration from other music genres. His "Mother and Child Reunion" (1972) is one of the first songs by a white musician to be influenced by reggae and "Loves Me Like A Rock" (1973) borrowed heavily from gospel.

Simon is one of the most successful songwriters in the 20th century. As a solo artist and as a member of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, he's responsible for some of rock's most beloved songs including "The Sound of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Kodachrome," and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." He's also a terrific live performer having sold thousands of Paul Simon tickets all over the world.

From 1957 to 1964, Simon wrote and recorded dozens of songs under many aliases. These singles were released on a variety of small labels and a few even managed to crack the Billboard Hot 100. Simon's first big hit was 1965's "The Sound of Silence" recorded when he was in Simon and Garfunkel. During the second half of the 1960's, that duo released five studio albums and contributed heavily to the soundtrack of the film "The Graduate."

Simon and Garfunkel broke up in 1970 but the two would frequently reunite for one-off performances, concert tours, and public appearances. The duo embarked on a Simon and Garfunkel tour in the early 1980's as well as a few more in the first decade of the 21st century.

After becoming a solo artist in 1970, Simon released three top five albums: "Paul Simon" (1972), "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" (1973), and "Still Crazy After All These Years" (1975). He didn't release another solo album until 1983's "Hearts and Bones." Simon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and in 2007 he was the first recipient of the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
