The first-ever Ozzfest ran just two days in 1996 and occurred on October 25-26 in Phoenix, Arizona, and Devore, California. When Marilyn Manson signed on to perform in 1997, protesters insisted that he be given the boot. Ozzfest politely declined that request. A similar problem arose in 2001 when Manson was on the bill for a post-Columbine tour.
For the third outing in '98, Ozzfest hopped over to the UK, getting back over there in both 2001 and 2002. Both of those years also saw Ozzfest compilation CDs released.
In 2005, a bit of a feud broke out between the Osbournes and Iron Maiden. During Iron Maiden's last set of the tour, the sound system got turned off several times and the band was pelted with eggs, among other things.
The 2007 run proudly boasted free tickets with the purchase of Ozzy's new Black Rain CD, thanks to corporate sponsorship to cover production costs. However, none of the bands were paid. That year also went down in history due to two men dying at the Holmdel, New Jersey, show and 83 other fans being arrested.
