One Direction was organically inorganically formed. The band consists of five contestants who failed to progress to the “judges’ houses' stage of the British television singing competition The X Factor. It was a fateful decision as they finished third in the competition (they lost to runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle).

The boys released their first single, “What Makes You Beautiful," in September of 2011. The song debuted at 28 in the U.S. It was the highest debut for an artist from the UK since 1998 (the song eventually peaked at number four). “What Makes You Beautiful" was the lead single from the previously mentioned Up All Night. The well-received album produced three more singles: “Gotta Be You," “One Thing," and “More Than This." Of those three songs, only “One Thing" charted in the United States.

The band’s sophomore effort, Take Me Home, dropped in early November of 2012. It was preceded by the smash hit single, “Live While We’re Young." The album and single will be backed by an epic world tour. In 2013, the band has more than 100 One Direction shows scheduled for Europe, North America and Oceania. That includes a three-night stand at Los Angeles’ Staples Center in early August. The band ends 2012 by collecting One Direction tickets at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
