Their neo-goth swagger bangs up against an emo- and punk-infused brooding and explodes in a torrent of powerful vocals. Back near the turn of the century, vocalist Gerard Way took the September 11 attacks as a catalyst to form a band. Drummer Matt Pelissier signed on within a week with guitarist Ray Toro joining soon thereafter. Once younger brother and bassist Mikey Way, along with guitarist Frank Iero, were recruited, My Chemical Romance was off to the races and on to the road. The band offered I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love to the world as their 2002 debut via Eyeball Records. It was enough to congregate an underground fan base. That, along with the band's pop-punk energy tempered by contemplative compositions, was enough to warrant a major label deal with Reprise Records the following year. In 2004, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was issued and found the boys from Jersey going platinum despite mixed critical reviews. Radio and MTV, on the other hand, made hits of "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," "Helena," and "The Ghost of You." When Pelissier departed halfway through the year Bob Bryar took his seat and My Chemical Romance headed out on tour. A supporting gig on Green Day's American Idiot run was coupled with co-headlining tours with Alkaline Trio, Story of the Year, and Taking Back Sunday. To bridge the gap until their next studio record, the CD/double-DVD set Life on the Murder Scene was released in March of 2006. It featured some live footage and rare recordings. It was enough to give Gerard and company the breathing room they needed to fashion and release The Black Parade in October. The concept piece quickly sold more than a million units. Another live collection, Black Parade Is Dead!, dropped in 2008 as the band continued a jam-packed touring schedule. Some down time was needed as band members processed all that had happened and dealt with personal issues. Once all that was handled, a renewed and more light-hearted My Chemical Romance emerged and hit the studio – first with producer Brendan O'Brien before deciding to work with Black Parade producer Rob Cavallo again. The result was 2010's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. The requisite touring ensued, as did appearances on various late-night television shows. Naturally, more success followed on the strength of singles like the invigorating “SING.” |
