About Melissa Etheridge

Melissa Etheridge has sold millions of albums and hundreds of thousands of concert tickets during her amazing career. She’s been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards and won an Academy Award. Her music is an accessible blend of rock, folk, and blues with a large dose of Americana thrown in for good measure. Her lyrics are personal and her voice has an unmistakable raspy quality. She’s a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen and you hear his influence in her music and see it in her live performances.

Etheridge released her self-titled debut in 1988. As of 2015, there are 13 studio albums in her discography. Her breakthrough oeuvre, and the bestselling LP of her career, is 1993’s Yes I Am. The title was widely considered to be Etheridge’s answer to the question “are you a lesbian?” Ever since she hit the music scene, rumors swirled that she was gay.

The opus peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 before earning a 6x platinum certification from the RIAA. Yes I am was produced by Hugh Pagdham and contains the singles “Come to My Window” and “I’m The Only One.”

In 1995, Melissa Etheridge followed Yes I Am with Your Little Secret. The collection didn’t sell as well as its predecessor but it did peak at number six on the Billboard 200—thus giving Etheridge her highest charting album. Meanwhile, “I’m The Only One” is the singer’s highest charting single. It reached number eight on Billboard’s Hot 100 in early 1995.

Etheridge was born on May 29, 1961 in Leavenworth, Kansas. She began playing guitar when she was eight years old. As a teenager, she played in various local country music bands. She briefly attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston but dropped out to pursue a career in rock and roll in Los Angeles. While in L.A., she made friends with Karla Leopold, wife of impresario Bill Leopold. Karla successfully convinced Bill to experienced Melissa Etheridge live. He liked what he heard and helped launched the singer’s career.

Besides being a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Etheridge is also a prominent activist. She has devoted time and money to a variety of causes including the fight against AIDS, victims of Hurricane Katrina, the environment, and breast cancer. Having come out as a lesbian in 1993, Etheridge is also a gay rights activist as well as a gay icon.

Etheridge performed at the 2005 Grammy Awards and did so completely bald. Her lack of hair was not a fashion statement. She lost her locks after receiving chemotherapy. Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2004.
