About Mariah Carey
It was 1988 and Mariah Carey was singing backup for Brenda K. Starr. One night, Carey accompanied Starr to a party where she met Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola. Amidst the festivities, Starr gave Mottola a demo tape of Carey singing. Not thinking much of it, Mottola didn't listen to the tape until he was on his way home from the party. Upon hearing Carey's powerful voice with a range of five-octaves he knew had to meet her. Mottola quickly returned to the party to speak with Carey but he soon realized that she had left. The executive then embarked on a mission to find and sign Carey to a recording contract. Mottola eventually found her and when he did he not only signed Carey to his label but he also made her his wife.
The story of Carey's big break was used by publicists to promote and sell her records when she first arrived on the music scene. While it's a great Cinderella-like story it did not end "happily-ever-after." Carey and Mottola divorced in 1997, and the dissolution of their relationship eventually led to her leaving Columbia Records in 2001.
Mariah Carey is one of the most successful American musical artists of all-time. She's sold more than 175 million albums, singles and videos during her career. With the exception of The Beatles (21), Carey has the most number-one singles in the U.S. (18). Her self-titled debut (released in 1990) went to number one in the U.S. and since then she's had five more chart topping albums.
Despite her amazing success, when most music fans hear the name Mariah Carey they don't always gravitate towards the fact that she's the number-one selling artist of the 1990's. Instead, they remember that she starred in one of the worst movies ever made, Glitter. The release date of her semi-autobiographical vanity project was pushed back three weeks after she was hospitalized for extreme exhaustion. The flick's soundtrack performed so poorly that it eventually led to Carey being dropped by her record label.
Every holiday season fans of Christmas music delight in Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Often mistaken for a cover, the tune was actually written by her and Walter Afanasieff. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is not only one of the most popular and successful modern holiday songs, it's also one of the best-selling ringtones in the United States.
