About Marc Anthony
Though he's probably best known as a pop star – he is, after all, the biggest-selling salsa artist of all time – but Marc Anthony is far more than that. Artists like Rubén Blades, José Feliciano, and Willie Colón formed his early influences along with some input from Air Supply.
A 12-year-old Anthony got his break singing on commercials, demos, and albums by artists like Menudo and Latin Rascals. Then, when he penned "Boy, I've Been Told" for Safire, he had his first hit. Before long, Anthony was working on a record of his own.
When the Night Is Over dropped in 1991 blending Anthony's Latin heritage with his hip hop love. For a celebration of one of the album's guests, Tito Puente, Anthony got to play Madison Square Garden.
The salsa-infused Otra Nota came next in 1993 with Todo a Su Tiempo following in 1995. The thick Latin vibe carried over onto Contra la Corriente two years later. The set won a Grammy in 1999 for Best Tropical Latin Performance and "Y Hubo Alguien" became his first number one Latin single.
His Marc Anthony: The Concert from Madison Square Garden aired on HBO beginning on Valentine's Day in 2000.
After helping Jennifer Lopez gain some traction in the Latin market with their “No Me Ames” duet, Anthony switched gears for his eponymous English debut. The lead single, "I Need to Know," peaked at number three while the album broke into the Top 10. He topped that success in 2002 with Mended, another English-language effort.
To keep his Latin momentum going, as well, Anthony issued Libre in 2001 which topped the Latin album charts for 14 weeks and Amar sin Mentiras in 2004 which won a Grammy for Latin Pop Album of The Year. In 2006, the Sigo Siendo Yo greatest-hits collection was released.
In his off time, Anthony has acted in both films and stage plays. Among his movie credits are Carlito's Way, Hackers, The Substitute, Big Night, Bringing Out the Dead, Man on Fire, In the Time of Butterflies, and El Cantante. Theatrically, Anthony appeared in Paul Simon's musical, The Capeman, in 1998.
