Journey has been just that for all of the various members involved over the years. Only guitarist Neal Schon has been in the group since its founding in 1973. The original line-up consisted of Schon with bassist Ross Valory, drummer Prairie Prince, and guitarist George Tickner. Keyboardist/singer Gregg Rolie was also an early signatory. Together, they made the band's eponymous 1975 debut and two more records.
Two years later, Steve Perry was recruited as lead singer for Journey's fourth effort, Infinity. By the end of 1978, the record had gone platinum. Two drummer changes had also happened with Steve Smith now filling the seat.
The subsequent two albums – 1979's Evolution and 1980's Departure – both did solid business. After the latter, Rolie took his leave to be replaced by Jonathan Cain. A live album, 1981's Captured, followed.
All of that was well and good, but it would be Escape that would really send Journey into the stratosphere. Three Top 10 songs later -- "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believin'," and "Open Arms" – the set was at the top of the charts and selling millions of copies. Its successor, Frontiers, dropped in 1983 and yielded another big hit in "Separate Ways." Perry followed that up with a solo project that also entered double-platinum territory, 1984's Street Talk.. ...read rest of article
