Josh Ritter is a singer-songwriter from Moscow, Idaho. His sound is usually categorized as folk although he dabbles in alternative country and straight forward rock. His music is quite literate and each song usually tells a story.
Ritter is frequently compared to acts like Joe Pug, Josh Rouse, and Joe Purdy. His voice, phrasing, and songwriting might remind one of Paul Simon. His music also reveals influences of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and John Prine.
Ritter is a great live act and a phenomenal songwriter, but he has never, nor will he ever, sell a bunch of records. Nonetheless, he has a modest but devoted fan base. He also has a strong following in Ireland.
In 2006, Ritter was named one of the “100 Greatest Living Songwriters.” This honor was bestowed on him by Paste magazine but it’s still a big deal nonetheless.
