Jason Derulo is one of the hardest working performers in the industry. Music producer J.R. Rotem, who signed Derulo to a recording contract, said the crooner possesses “one of the most impressive work ethics” he’s ever seen. That’s saying something because Rotem has worked with a slew of successful artists.
You can definitely tell that Derulo labors mightily by the quality of music he produces. His penchant for hard work is also apparent in his amazing physique. The singer says he works out about three hours a day and that includes when he’s on the road.
Jason Derulo is an award-winner singer-songwriter. His sound is crafted by taking R&B and mixing it with elements of hip hop, pop, and dance music. Adding a dance element to his sound shouldn’t come as a surprise since Derulo is also an accomplished hoofer and choreographer. In 2012, he was a “dance master” on an Australian television dance competition (unfortunately the show was canceled after four episodes).
Derulo began his music career writing music for other performers including Diddy, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston, and Danity Kane. In 2006, after winning the grand prize on the season finale of Showtime at the Apollo, Derulo received a recording contract. He released his first single “Whatcha Say” in early August of 2009. The single eventually went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. His self-titled debut album dropped in March of 2010. The work peaked at number 11.
In late 2009 and into 2010, Derulo opened for Lady Gaga during her “Monster Ball Tour.” In 2010, Derulo performed the same role for The Black Eyed Peas during their trek through the Great White North. In August of 2010, Derulo launched his first headlining world tour. Interesting for an American R&B singer, his tour began in London.
Derulo does very well in the United Kingdom. Not only does he sell a lot of Jason Derulo tickets in the Queen’s realm but his singles and albums generally chart higher over there then they do in his home country.
Jason Derulo was born on Sept. 21, 1989 in Miami, Florida. His real name is “Desrouleaux” of which “Derulo” is its phonetic spelling. In 2012, Derulo broke one of his vertebrae while rehearsing his live show. The accident occurred on Jan 3. He didn’t return to performing until May 22 when he appeared on American Idol.
