About Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx is entertainment’s jack of all trades, earning equal acclaim for his comedy, acting and musical career. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for Best Actor for his work on the movie Ray. He has been nominated for several Grammy awards for his contributions to the music industry and took home a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a musical/comedy as well.

Born Eric Bishop, Foxx started doing stand-up comedy in 1989. He changed his name to Jamie Foxx after finding out that females on the comedy circuit were usually called to perform first. He felt that the name was inconspicuous enough to forgo any gender bias. Also, the Foxx surname was a tribute to comedy legend Redd Foxx.

Foxx was invited to join the cast of In Living Color in the early 90s, before taking on his own sitcom, The Jamie Foxx Show, in 1996. The follow year, Foxx graced the silver screen for the first time in the movie, Booty Call. He then went on to a critically-acclaimed part in the movie Any Given Sunday, after which his movie career took off. His role in the movie Collateral, alongside Tom Cruise, earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

However, it was his role in the movie Ray that turned Foxx into a bonafide superstar --- and reminded the world of his vocal chops. Shortly after the movie, Foxx got back into music heavily, collaborating with rapper Kanye West on his hit single “Gold Digger,” which once again highlights Foxx’s ability to mimic the voice of the legendary Ray Charles.

Currently, Foxx is one of the most bankable stars in both the movie and music industries. He has begun crossing genres, working with musicians from rap to rock to country, and continues to be one of the movie industry’s leading men.
