About James Blunt

English singer/songwriter James Blunt comes from a military family. And so, upon his graduation from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, it was proper for him to join the Army. Working his way up to captain, Blunt was a member of NATO's peacekeeping troops stationed in Kosovo where he served as an armored reconnaissance officer and the Life Guard Regiment in the British Household Cavalry where he started as a second lieutenant.

Still, a love of music nagged at him. Once he completed his military obligations, Blunt started to pursue his dream. Producer Linda Perry caught a performance by Blunt at Austin's famed South by Southwest festival and signed him right up to her indie label, Custard Records.

After two early singles, Blunt's 2005 debut, Back to Bedlam, finally yielded the “You're Beautiful” hit which launched him into the pop stratosphere. The song topped charts in 16 territories and pushed the album along to sales of more than 11 million units worldwide. Back to Bedlam was anointed the fastest-selling album in one year by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Tours and more tours filled that year and the next alongside artists like Elton John, Lloyd Cole, Jason Mraz, and others, followed by the Back to Bedlam World Tour. Accolades and awards also flooded in, including two Brit Awards and two MTV Video Awards, along with five Grammy Award nominations.

To follow-up that success, Blunt issued 2006's Chasing Time: The Bedlam Sessions, a collection of live tracks and other cuts. That effort bided his time while making his second set, 2007's All the Lost Souls.

All the Lost Souls achieved gold sales status in the UK within its first four days of release. Some critics, though, were less impressed by the effort with Rolling Stone calling it "forgettable ballads that make Coldplay seem like the Arctic Monkeys." Other reviews, like one in Billboard, saw in Blunt :not just a one-hit wonder."

Despite that mixed reaction from critics, the “1973” single – which was inspired by Blunt's experience at a club called Pacha in his homeland of Ibiza – did pretty well for Blunt, enough so to warrant a second world tour and a co-headlining run with Sheryl Crow.

Some Kind of Trouble followed in late 2010, debuting in the fourth-highest seat on the UK album charts with sales of more than 100,000 copies its first week. The lead singles, “Stay the Night” and “So Far Gone,” both did moderate business and the critics were, once again, lukewarm.
