Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
Every year, nearly 2 million people attend the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The event is held at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas. Nearly 22,000 volunteers are needed to execute the wide range of activities.
Highlighting the event is the world's largest livestock exhibition and the world's richest regular-season rodeo. Other attractions include the World's Championship Bar-B-Que contest, the Calf Scramble, trail rides, the Rodeo Parade, a 5K walk & run, a carnival, pig racing, an International Wine competition, livestock sales, and concerts.
The concerts at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo feature some of the nation's top musical acts. In the past, the rodeo has hosted such legends as Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Reba McEntire, and Brooks & Dunn. While most of the acts are from the country music genre, the event has showcased a wide range of artists including Ramon Ayala, ZZ Top, Rod Stewart, Beyonce, John Mayer, and The Black Eyed Peas.
The Friday before the rodeo begins, the citizens of Houston celebrate "Go Texan Day." Everyone is encouraged to don Western attire such as cowboy boots, shirts, and hats until the rodeo ends. The 20-day festival begins with the Downtown Rodeo Roundup and Parade.
The rodeo began in 1931 and moved to its current location in 1966. Originally called The Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition, it changed to its current appellation in 1961. In 1996, organizers adopted RodeoHouston as the official name of the Houston rodeo.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo impacts the Houston-area to the tune of more than $344 million a year. Through the years it has enriched the lives of thousands of young Texans by providing them with scholarships. The event's annual commitment to education is nearly $11 million.
