Gwen Stefani Biography

Southern California was the setting for Gwen Stefani's coming of age. As a teen, she fell hard for the ska and new wave records that her brother played around the house. Bands like Madness, Fishbone, Selecter, and the Untouchables sparked her passion. So, when that same brother (Eric) invited her into his new band, she jumped at the chance. And No Doubt was born.

In 1991, the band landed a deal with Interscope Records, issuing their debut the following year. It didn't do well, so the label withdrew all financial support. Undeterred, No Doubt funded Beacon Street Collection themselves in 1994.

Though the effort did a bit better, Eric departed to work on The Simpsons. Meanwhile, Gwen's relationship with bassist Tony Kanal had come to an end. She channeled that hardship into the songs that made up their third set, Tragic Kingdom.

Three hits later – "Just a Girl," "Spiderwebs," and "Don't Speak" – Tragic Kingdom was a double Grammy nominee at the top of the the album chart. Gwen, in particular, garnered attention, even making People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People list. Rumors swarmed that the other band members were jealous.

Still, in 2000 and 2001, respectively, they issued Return of Saturn and Rock Steady. The albums, though, failed to gain the same sort of headlines as did Gwen's relationship with Gavin Rossdale of Bush. Gwen also stepped outside the No Doubt lines by collaborating on Moby's "Southside" and Eve's "Let Me Blow Your Mind."

With No Doubt on hiatus, Stefani pursued an official solo project that involved Linda Perry, Dr. Dre, Andre 3000, the Neptunes, Jimmy James, Terry Lewis, and more. What resulted was Love.Angel.Music.Baby. led by the dance hit "What You Waiting For?" in late 2004. Two more singles, "Rich Girl" and "Hollaback Girl," also did well.

Putting herself out there even further, Stefani made her acting debut as Jean Harlow in the Martin Scorsese-directed film The Aviator. On top of that, she dabbled in clothing design with her L.A.M.B. line, a digital camera for Hewlett-Packard, and a collection of fashion dolls.

Despite being pregnant in 2006, Stefani continued her break-neck pace and returned to the studio with another array of producers at the helm including Kanal, Swizz Beatz, Akon, the Neptunes, and Nellee Hooper.

After giving birth to a son in the spring, Stefani released the first single, "Wind It Up," in the fall with The Sweet Escape following in short order in tandem with the concert DVD Harajuku Lovers Live. Her work on the title track with Akon won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Subsequent singles included “4 in the Morning” and “Early Winter” with the Sweet Escape Tour supporting her efforts.

Combined, her two solo albums sold close to 20 million copies. But, according to the artist herself, that was it for the solo adventure. It was back to No Doubt after that.

The band played some shows over the following few years as they worked on new material. A full No Doubt album is slated for 2012.
