About Goo Goo Dolls the BandIn 1998, John Rzeznik was experiencing a career-ending bout of writer's block when he was approached by producers who wanted him to write a song for The City of Angels soundtrack. Rzeznik, who was on the verge of quitting the Goo Goo Dolls, battled his demons and came up with a song. But it wasn't just any song; it was to be his band's seminal hit single. The song Rzeznik composed for The City of Angels soundtrack was "Iris." The song peaked at number nine but stayed on top of the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for a record breaking 18 weeks. The song also garnered three Grammy Award nominations. It's without a doubt the band's greatest record. The Goo Goo Dolls formed in 1986 in Buffalo, New York. The trio was originally composed of singer and guitarist Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska. In 1994, Tutuska was replaced by Mike Malinin. The band released its self-titled debut in 1987 with Takac singing all the songs. Rzeznik began taking the lead on vocals more and more in the band's next two albums—Jed (1989) and Hold Me Up (1990). During this era, the Goo Goo Dolls ' music had a real punk rock-heavy metal vibe. As the band matured, and as Rzeznik took over more of the lead singing duties, their music morphed into the polished alternative sound that they are famous for. This transformation is especially apparent on their 1993 release Superstar Car Wash. Interestingly enough, Superstar featured a song co-written by Paul Westerberg of The Replacements, the band the Goo Goo Dolls were often accused of imitating. The band's 1995 release, A Boy Named Goo, featured the hit single "Name." This provided the Goo Goo Dolls with their first real taste of mainstream success. The band then became superstars with 1998's Dizzy Up The Girl. The album not only included "Iris" but the hits "Slide" and "Black Balloon." The Goo Goo Dolls continued their success with 2002's Gutterflower, 2006's Let Love In, and 2010's Something for the Rest of Us, all of which peaked inside the top ten of the Billboard 200. Overall, and as of 2010, the Goo Goo Dolls have released 14 top-10 singles, and sold nearly 9 million albums. The band is often derided for their awful name. They came up with "Goo Goo Dolls," a toy found in a True Detective advertisement, in a rush before a gig. Somehow the name stuck. At the time, the band had no idea they were going to make it big. Rzeznik admits if he had the chance to do it all over again, he would come up with a much better band name.
