About the Sasquatch Fest

The Sasquatch! Music Festival kicked off in 2002, the brainchild of concert promoter Adam Zacks. Held annually at the Gorge Amphitheater in George, Wash., the event focuses on indie rock bands and singer/songwriters, though hip hop artists and alt-rock bands aren't out of the question.

Zacks honed his promotion chops by booking the Roseland Theater in Portland. A move to Seattle sparked his interest in creating a festival: “Sasquatch was an idea born on a hunch that there was untapped demand for a certain kind of festival that catered to the eclectic tastes of music enthusiasts. It started in 2002, which was shortly after a number of the touring festivals (Lollapalooza, Lilith, Horde) had petered out and the beginning of the wave of regional festivals that started with Coachella and now is a dominant force on the music landscape, with Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, etc.”

Although the event has stayed true to its roots, some tweaks and experiments have taken place over the years. The 2004 fest was hosted by comedian David Cross, while the 2006 schedule stretched across three days and was interrupted by a hailstorm on the Saturday afternoon.

In 2007, comedians Sarah Silverman, Michael Showalter, and Aziz Ansari shared hosting duties over the course of a scaled-back two-day festival. That year also had M.I.A. on the slate, but the band had to cancel due to visa issues.

The next year a comedy tent was added and the proceedings were bumped back up to cover three days over the Memorial Day weekend with R.E.M., The Flaming Lips, and The Cure leading the way.

The 2009 Sasquatch! followed the same formula and included Zach Galifianakis, among others, in the comedy tent with Jane's Addiction, Kings of Leon, and Ben Harper on the main stage.

Sasquatch! 2010's line-up featured Massive Attack, Ween, and My Morning Jacket in the headlining slots with OK Go, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Tegan and Sara, and lots more music filling the three days. Rob Riggle and Luke Burbank were on tap to lead the comedy troupes.

Other headliners over the years have included the Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Pixies, String Cheese Incident, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, and many more. Some artists have become all but mainstays on the roster, Neko Case and Ben Gibbard at the top of the list.
