About Erykah Badu
Erykah Badu (born Erica Abi Wright in South Dallas) is one part eccentric, one part classy, and two parts soulful. That combination has earned her the title 'Queen of Neo-Soul.'
Having shown signs of musical talent from a very early age, Erica became Erykah in her teens, shifting away from what she felt was her 'slave' name. The syllable 'kah' represents the inner self, while her new surname – Badu – has significance in both African and Arabic circles, in the latter it means truth and light.
Though she didn't get a degree, Badu studied the arts in both high school and college. After quitting college, she worked a few low-paying jobs to support herself while focusing on music. That sacrifice paid off when her demo landed her a duet with D'Angelo on “Your Precious Love.” In turn, the duet secured her a deal with Universal Records.
Badu's 1997 debut, Baduizm, debuted at number two on the Billboard charts. On the strength of the lead single “On & On,” the album sold three million copies and won a couple of Grammy Awards. It also drew comparisons to Billie Holiday.
The follow-up was the aptly titled Live, Badu's first live recording. It climbed to number four on the charts and went double-platinum while yielding the hit "Tyrone." Her collaboration with The Roots in 1999 won her another Grammy.
After taking some time with her first child, Badu was back in 2000 with Mama's Gun. The more organic sounding album included the song “Bag Lady” which was remixed into a hit that topped the R&B charts for seven weeks and nabbed a Grammy nomination. The album also went platinum.
A 2000 duet with Common, "Love of My Life," appeared on the Brown Sugar soundtrack and brought home Badu's fourth Grammy after topping the R&B charts once again.
Suffering from writer's block, Badu continued to tour in 2002 and 2003 on what she dubbed the "Frustrated Artist Tour," her attempt to find some inspiration. It worked. She went back into the studio and emerged with Worldwide Underground in late 2003. The set made it up to number three on the album charts and collected four Grammy nominations.
Taking another hiatus to have another child, Badu wasn't heard from in any large regard until the single “Honey” was leaked in late 2007 ahead of the February, 2008 release of New Amerykah Part One (4th World War).
New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) followed in early 2010. The filming of a video for “Window Seat” took place on March 17, 2010 in Dallas's Dealey Plaza on the site on President John F. Kennedy's assassination. In it, Badu walks down the sidewalk, slowly undressing until she is completely naked. As the song ends, a shot rings out, Badu's head jerks, and she falls to the ground. Badu was cited with a disorderly conduct misdemeanor charge for the incident.
Badu has also done a bit of acting along the way with appearances in Blues Brothers 2000, The Cider House Rules, and House of D, among others.
