David Gray's White Ladder (1999) features the popular singles "This Year's Love," "Sail Away," "Please Forgive Me," and the smash hit "Babylon." Gray's seminal release is the biggest-selling album of all-time... in Ireland.
There are two very unique aspects to the career of English singer-songwriter David Gray.
One, Gray is far more popular and successful in the United Kingdom than he is in the United States. For instance, White Ladder reached number one on the UK album charts but it peaked at just #35 in America.
His 2002 release, A New Day at Midnight, sold nearly a million copies in the UK but in the United States it sold only about half that. The album reached number one in his home country while barely cracking the top 20 (it reached #17) in America.
Gray's 2005 offering, Life in Slow Motion, was the third number one album of his career in the U.K. but it couldn't break into the top 15 (it topped out at #16) in the United States. Obviously, there's something about Gray's sound that resonates more with European audiences than with American music fans.
The second unique aspect of Gray's career is how he rose to fame. Gray's first two albums, A Century Ends (1993) and Flesh (1994) were both commercials flops. However, the two albums, which featured Gray playing acoustic folk music, did earn him a favorable reputation amongst folk-rock aficionados.
His next album, Sell, Sell, Sell (1996), Gray mixed folk with alternative rock, and more importantly, electronic music. The album sputtered on the charts but he did receive positive attention from critics and some modest airplay.
Finally in 1999, Gray put everything together for his fourth studio album, White Ladder. His blend of folk, alternative, and computerized music was both a commercial and artistic success. The album even garnered Gray a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist. Also of note, White Ladder was the first album released by ATO records, a record company co-founded by Dave Matthews.
Gray's haunting voice fits perfectly with his indelible melodies and mature lyrics. He also masterfully combines the timbre of his acoustic guitar with exotic landscapes of electronic music. In many ways, Gray is a true pioneer having successfully combined the genres of acoustic folk rock, alternative music, and electronica.
While he hasn't achieved the same success in the States as he's achieved in Europe, Gray's music has been featured in several American television shows including Alias, Boston Legal, CSI, Dawson's Creek, E.R., Psych, Rescue Me, Smallville, and Without A Trace.
Gray's ninth studio album, Foundling, was released in September of 2010.
