David Gilmour Bio

David Gilmour is one of the creative forces behind the legendary British rock band Pink Floyd. He’s also an accomplished guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and producer. Gilmour sang lead vocals on one of Pink Floyd’s most memorable songs, “Money,” and co-wrote some of the band’s biggest singles including “Comfortably Numb,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Run Like Hell.” In 2011, Rolling Stone Magazine named Gilmour the 14th greatest guitarist of all-time. He also produced the classic new wave song “Life In A Northern Town” by Dream Academy.

David Gilmour was born March 6, 1946 in Cambridge, England. He went to school with eventual Pink Floyd members Syd Barrett and Roger Waters but the three didn’t play together until they were several years removed from their school days. Gilmour tried to make a go of it with a band called Joker’s Wild but found little success while busking around continental Europe. In fact, things got so bad for Gilmour that he was checked into a hospital and treated for malnutrition.

Gilmour joined Pink Floyd in January of 1968 at the request of drummer Nick Mason. He eventually became the band’s lead guitarist when mental illness forced Barrett to quit rock and roll. While Pink Floyd would go on to dominate the 1970s, and become one of rock’s most influential bands, Gilmour’s relationship with Floyd’s other creative force, Roger Waters, slowly deteriorated. Believing that he was being underutilized, Gilmour released his self-tilted solo debut in 1978. He would return to Pink Floyd the following year to record the concept album, The Wall.

Things weren’t improving with Waters, so Gilmour focused on his solo career and released his second studio album, the very personal About Face, in 1984. The album was promoted by a David Gilmour tour of Europe and the United States. Gilmour returned to Pink Floyd in 1986 but this time with full control of the band and with no Waters. This led to the release of A Momentary Lapse of Reason in 1987 and The Division Bell in 1994. In 2005, Gilmour and Waters reunited with the others members of Pink Floyd for a one-off performance at Live 8. The event increased Pink Floyd album sales as well as talk of a full-fledge reunion. However Gilmour and Waters were still at odds over the direction of the band and nothing materialized.

Through the decades Gilmour has worked with a number of artists including Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Eric Clapton. For a brief period in the mid-1980s, he was a member of Bryan Ferry’s band. Gilmour would release another studio album, On an Island, in and a live album, Live in Gdansk, in 2008. The guitar god has also toured extensively. David Gilmour tickets have been sold to arenas and stadiums all over the world.

Besides his illustrious career in music, Gilmour is also a philanthropist. He’s given sizeable financial contributions to several charities and in 2003 was appointed CBE for his substantial charitable deeds.
