Daughtry plays a radio-friendly brand of rock that’s highly influenced by pop music and built on good songwriting. The band’s sound is similar to the music of Nickelback, Hinder, Lifehouse, and Theory of a Deadman.
Daughty is frequently mistaken as the solo project of the band’s namesake, Chris Daughtry. While Daughtry is an actual band their origins fall somewhere between a solo project and a fabricated act.
Chris Daughtry was a finalist on the fifth season of American Idol. After the season ended, he decided to form a band. Auditions were held and the four musicians chosen were lead guitarist Josh Steely, bassist Josh Paul, drummer Joey Barnes, and guitarist Jeremy Brady.
Interestingly, Barnes and Brady, who Daughtry knew before the auditions, are no longer with the band.
The band chose the name “Daughtry” for practical reason. Chris Daughtry had just finished his A.I. run and had some name recognition. So they decided to call the group “Daughtry” to capitalize on his recent success.
During the recording of the band’s first album, however, Daughtry was its only member. It’s due to these odd beginnings that many erroneously believe “Daughtry” is a Chris Daughtry solo project.
Daughtry’s Current Lineup
Chris Daughter – lead vocals and guitar
Josh Steely – lead guitar
Josh Paul – bass
Brian Craddock – rhythm guitar
Elvio Fernandes – keyboards
Daughtry released their self-titled, debut album in 2006. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and has been certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. It also produced four hit singles.
The band’s sophomore effort, Leave This Town, dropped in 2009. The album has sold a little more than 1.3 million copies but went all the way to the top of the charts.
Daughtry’s third studio release, Break the Spell, hit streets in late 2011. It was followed by Baptized in 2013. Both albums peaked inside the top ten.
The band’s first two singles are also their biggest hits: “It’s Not Over” (2009) went to number four and “Home” (2007) went to number five. Other major Daughtry singles include “Over You,” “What About Now,” “No Surprise,” and “Crawling Back to You.”
Daughtry are quite the road warriors. They’ve launched five major tours between 2009 and 2014. Daughtry tickets have been collected in North America, Europe, and Asia. Besides gigs at major sporting events, they’ve also opened for Bon Jovi and Nickelback and have toured with the Goo Goo Dolls and 3 Doors Down.
