About Lyle Lovett

Unless he starts reeling off a string hits that would make Paul McCartney jealous, Lyle Lovett will always be known as the quirky country music singer who married Julia Roberts.

The singer and the actress met on the set of Robert Altman’s The Player in 1992. They were married a year later only to divorce in the spring of 1995. Their relationship, doomed by the rigors of their respective careers, was fodder for Lovett’s 1996 masterpiece, The Road To Ensenada.

Lovett was born in a suburb of Houston, Texas and attended Texas A&M University where he studied German and journalism.

He entered the music business as a song writer in 1980 and released his first album in 1986. Lovett released his 13th studio album, Natural Forces, in 2009.

Highlights from Lovett’s vast discography include Lyle Lovett and His Large Band (1989), Live In Texas (1999) and It’s Not Big It’s Large (2007).

Lovett is also known for performing on Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got A Friend in Me” for the soundtrack to the 1996 film Toy Story.

His albums have garnered much critical success including four Grammy Awards—most notably the 1996 trophy for Best Country Album (Road to Ensenada). While not extremely commercially successful, six of his albums have reached Gold status.

On the road, Lovett performs with “his Large Band. The name is a take on the phrase “big band.” According to Lovett, his backup band is big but they don’t play big band music. That’s why he calls them a “Large Band.”

In March of 2002, Lovett was injured at his uncle’s farm when a bull rammed him into a fence. Despite suffering a rather serious injury, Lovett recovered in six months and was back on the road by the summer of 2003.

Lovett has appeared in a number of films and television shows. He’s been in several Robert Altman films as well as The New Guy and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. On the small screen he’s appeared in Mad About you, Brothers & Sisters and Dharma & Greg.

Lovett’s country sound is complex and inviting to fans both inside and outside of the genre. His music fuses country and country-western with pop, jazz, blues, gospel and folk influences. The Texan always emphasizes good songwriting.
