About Little Big Town

It must have crossed their minds. The four members of Little Big Town had to have considered quitting. It was 2002 and Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook had been performing as Little Big Town for three years. They had seen a recording contract come and go which yielded no albums or singles.

Now they had another recording contract and were finally able to release their self-titled debut. It peaked at number 40 on the country album charts and its two singles, “Don’t Waste My Time and “Everything Changes,” languished. On top of that, Fairchild and Sweet divorced their respective spouses and Westbrook’s father died. Things got so bad for the quartet that they had to take day jobs to support themselves. Little Big Town had reached a nadir. They must have contemplated, at least on some level, calling it quits.

In 2005, the band signed with a record label co-owned by Clint Black and in May release the single “Boondocks.” The single peaked at number nine. In October, Little Big Town’s second album dropped, The Road To Here. The album went all the way to number 12 on the country album charts and was eventually certified Platinum. Little Big Town had made it.

Their next album, A Place To land, did slightly better on the charts, it reached number ten, although it failed to duplicate the sales of its predecessor. However, the band’s fourth and fifth albums, The Reason Why (2010) and Tornado (2012), both debuted at number one and both cracked the top five of the Billboard 200. Tornado also produced the group’s first number one single, “Pontoon.”

Even when the band was struggling, fans could always count on exciting Little Big Town concerts. The group has always had a knack for putting on a great live show. Some of those with Little Big Town tickets are surprise to discover that the band doesn’t have a lead singer—quiet rare for a vocal group. Besides relying heavily on four-part harmonies, the foursome takes turns singing lead.

During their career, Little Big Town has toured with a number of major country music acts including George Strait, Sugarland, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, and Rascal Flatts. The group’s first headlining tour came in 2011 and their second two years later. The “Tornado Tour 2013” saw the band playing all over the United States with supporting acts David Nail and Kacey Musgraves.

Contrary to popular belief the band is not comprised of a pair of husbands and wives. It’s only comprised of one husband and wife couple. Fairchild and Westbrook tied the knot on the last day of May in 2006. Schlapman (nee Roads) married Stephen Schlapman in November of 2006 and Sweet married Rebecca Arthur in March of 2007. All four members of Little Big Town are parents.
