About Lady Antebellum
As with so many country bands, Nashville was the setting for the beginnings of Lady Antebellum in 2006. The harmony-laden trio, similar to Nickel Creek, is comprised of Charles Kelley (lead and background vocals), Dave Haywood (background vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin) and Hillary Scott (lead and background vocals).
The group first worked together doing background vocals on Jim Brickman's single "Never Alone" in 2007. Seeing something special, Capitol Records snatched them up and the first Lady Antebellum single, "Love Don't Live Here," shot up the country charts to number three.
The band's 2008 eponymous debut went platinum on the strength of that track and two more like it -- "Lookin' for a Good Time" and "I Run to You," which topped the charts. Touring with Martina McBride's on her Waking Up Laughing run didn't hurt either.
A second number one came with "Need You Now," the lead and title track from their second release. Earning more than country cred, "Need You Now" crossed over and started its ascent of the Billboard Hot 100, making it all the way to number two. It also climbed the Hot Adult Contemporary chart all the way to the top seat. "American Honey" followed suit to become the third notch on their country chart-topping belt.
In February of 2010, the Need You Now album debuted at the top of the Billboard charts, as well, racking up sales of nearly 500,000 copies in its first week. It doubled that to achieve platinum status within the first month month. Two months later, Lady Antebellum appeared on American Idol for a bit of sweet irony, as the show had twice rejected Scott as a contestant.
Rewards, too, have flooded in. Lady Antebellum was named Top New Duo or Group by the Academy of Country Music in 2009 and New Artist of the Year by the Country Music Association in 2008. They even broke the six-year reign of Rascal Flatts as 2009's Vocal Group of the Year at the CMAs.
After a couple of Grammy nominations each year, a win finally came in 2010 for Best Country Performance by Duo or Group. Nods for Top Vocal Group, Song of the Year, and Single of the Year ("Need You Now") were also awarded at the 2010 ACM Awards.
