About Ms. Joan Rivers

As the years have worn on, Joan Rivers has become known almost as much for her cosmetic surgery as her brash humor.

It was the very early 1960s when Rivers got her comedic start. After a short stint at Chicago's Second City, she returned home to her native New York City and hit the Greenwich Village scene. Soon enough, she was appearing on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar.

More television work followed with Candid Camera, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and even her own short-lived talk show. Comedy albums also started to flow. This pattern continued through subsequent decades with appearances on The Carol Burnett Show, Hollywood Squares, The Electric Company, and more.

Eventually, Rivers became a Las Vegas headliner and held that esteemed position over the course of the 1980s. During that time, she also guest-hosted The Tonight Show on many occasions. However, when Fox television announced that Rivers would get her own show in the same time slot, the closeness with Carson ended. She and her husband were eventually both fired by Fox which, allegedly, led to her husband's suicide.

As an author, Rivers' best-selling book, The Life and Hard Times of Heidi Abramowitz, was published in 1984 and was followed up with a comedy special.

Daytime hosting proved more successful as The Joan Rivers Show enjoyed a five-year run and won an Emmy. Then, E! Entertainment Television came calling, luring Rivers into hosting various red carpet specials at big Hollywood events.

After 2000 rolled around, Rivers had hopped to the TV Guide Channel for her red carpet gigs. She also guest-starred on a number of shows including Nip/Tuck, Drawn Together, Celebrity Apprentice, and more. Further still, she's often found on The Shopping Channel touting her jewelry line.

Another regular job on TV Land's How'd You Get So Rich? began in 2009. Then, in 2011, she teamed up with her daughter Melissa once again for WE TV's Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best reality program.
