City and Colour is the name used by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dallas Green. He selected an alias because he felt uneasy about performing under his own name. If you haven’t figured it out yet, “City and Colour” describes his appellation. “Dallas” is the name of a city and “green” is a color (it’s spelled with a “u” because Green is Canadian). The name Dallas Green may sound familiar to you. That’s because Green was the lead guitarist for the punk band Alexisonfire. Don’t expect the same type of music. City and Colour plays a striped down and raw brand of folk-slash-alternative music. When you have City and Colour tickets you’re in for an evening of cerebral, pensive, and melancholy songs.
Remember, Green once said that in his opinion the best music is sad music.
Bring Me Your Love (2008)
Little Hell (2011)
The Hurry and the Harm (2013)
Green released his first album under the name City and Colour in November of 2005. Leading up to the album, Green had put songs he had written and recorded on the internet for fans to download. Eventually, these songs (some rewritten) were put together and released as the album Sometimes. By the way, the work was well received by critics.
First U.S. Tour
City and Colour’s first North American tour was opening for Tegan and Sara. That trek began in September of 2008. City and Colour launched their first headlining jaunt the following January. Green was supported by American Blues singer William Elliott Whitmore.
Obviously, Green is very talented. Besides the guitar, banjo, harmonica, and piano, Green also plays the drums. He’s an accomplished songwriter but struggles with one aspect of the process. That aspect is writing lyrics. Green says melodies are not a problem but finding the right words to sing is always an issue.
