About Bush
In 1992, as Nirvana and Pearl Jam kicked up enough grunge dust in the U.S. to fashion a whole movement in music, British vocalist/guitarist Gavin Rossdale was pulling together a new band on his own. Bush took its cues from the Seattle boys and incorporated loud guitars, stop-start dynamics, and gutsy vocals.
A deal in the States with Interscope Records led to their debut, Sixteen Stone, at the end of 1994. The video for “Everything Zen” started gaining some traction on MTV in December helping the album go gold the following spring. The American success helped them secure a record deal back home.
More singles – including “Little Things,” “Comedown,” and “Glycerine” – kept the album climbing up the modern rock charts to the fourth seat with the two latter cuts hitting number one and finding their way into the Top 40 on the pop charts.
Still, negative reviews plagued the band. As a response, Bush brought in producer Steve Albini (PJ Harvey, Nirvana) to work on their sophomore set, 1996's Razorblade Suitcase. Despite a lukewarm critical reception, the album debuted in the top seat on the Billboard charts and went on to sell more than two million copies.
For 1997, Bush issued a collection of remixes in Deconstructed. It would be another two years before The Science of Things would drop and then two more for Golden State which was supported by a sold-out North American tour. Guitarist Chris Traynor (from Helmet) joined the ranks to fill out the live sound only a few months before Nigel Pulsford took his leave and Traynor became a full-time member.
It wasn't enough, though, as Bush decided to split up in 2002. Come 2004, Rossdale emerged with his new Institute project before taking a solo flight in 2008.
Bush reunited in 2011 with The Sea of Memories and an accompanying tour.
