About the Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas (BEP) are a Hip/Hop, funk, phunk, Jazz and Rap/Hip-Hop group from the Los Angeles area.

How different would pop music have been if Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls) joined the Black Eyed Peas? In 2000, the Peas' female singer, Kim Hill, departed due to her unhappiness at the band's decision to go mainstream. Sans a backup singer, will.i.am, Taboo, and apl.de.ap approached Scherzinger. However, Scherzinger was under contract with a band called Eden's Crush, a creation of the WB television show "Popstars," and was forced to decline.

Fate quickly intervened and the band met a female singer who once starred in the children's show "Kids Incorporated." This former child-actor was fronting a fledgling band called Wild Orchid. Eventually, this singer accepted an invitation to join the Black Eyed Peas. Her name was Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson. The rest as they say is history.

Maybe "history" is too strong of a word, for as Rolling Stone noted since hiring Fergie the band has released nothing but "dumb songs in an aesthetic commitment that extends from their garish wardrobes to their United Colors of Benetton worldview." Nonetheless, the Black Eyed Peas have become one of the most successful pop bands in the world selling over 23 million albums and winning multiple Grammy Awards.

In 2009, their singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling" both reached the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for a record 26 consecutive weeks. In addition to numerous chart successes, both in American and aboard, the Black Eyed Peas, and their music, have been featured in the movies Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Bulworth; in the video game The Urbz: Sims In The City; and in commercials for various Apple products.

According to front man will.i.am, the band's 2009 effort "The E.N.D. (which stands for "Energy Never Dies") is more like a musical diary than an album. In interviews, will.i.am expressed his desire to move away from the traditional concept of "album" and towards an approach that's conducive to downloading.
