About Bassnectar

He’s played Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Burning Man. He’s sold out entire tours and started his own day-long music festival called “Bass Center.” Is he a singer or a virtuoso musician? No, but he is one of the biggest names in electronic dance music (EDM). We’re talking about the one and only Bassnectar. He exploded onto the EDM scene in 2001 with his debut album, Freakbeat for the Beatfreaks.

Since then, Bassnectar has released nearly a dozen more albums and EPs including his critically acclaimed 2012 opus, Vava Voom. However, it’s his amazing live shows that have captured the hearts and minds of electronic music fans all over the world.

Bassnectar treats concertgoers to maximum amounts of bass, mind-numbing beats, and state-of-the-art light shows. Even more exciting, his concerts are never planned. He just goes out on stage and plays what feels right and what will get everyone’s body moving. His ability to be spontaneous and interactive creates a symbiosis with the audience; it’s a special relationship fans don’t have with other artists.

Bassnectar came to electronic music by the way of death metal. While he’s largely credited with bringing elements of heavy metal to EDM, he actually draws from every musical source under the sun. Bassnectar’s only limitations are his imagination. This diverse approach has landed him on the Mt. Rushmore of EDM along with DangerMau5, Tiesto, and Skrillex.

Bassnectar is the stage name of Lorin Ashton. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and from an early age expressed interest in artistically expressing himself. When he was just 10 years old, Ashton made films with his father’s camera. He eventually got into music; he bought a guitar and played a set of homemade drums. In high school, Ashton formed a band and organized underground shows—organizing events has always been a big part of his career. In 1995, he attended his first rave and was immediately smitten by the world of electronic music. From then on, he immersed himself into the EDM industry.

Bassnectar also concerns himself with charitable work and social change. He’s an advocate for free press, net neutrality, and ending corporate personhood. His music and political views have created a community of followers known as “Bass Heads.” To honor this dedicated bunch, Bassnectar takes time at every show to face the back of the stage and take a picture of himself and his audience.
